Ray Charles (雷‧查爾斯)

縱橫美國樂壇數十載，跨越靈魂、藍調、搖滾、R&B、福音、鄉村、流行樂界的大老，
人稱「The Genius」的Ray Charles (雷‧查爾斯)，於西元2004年6月10日在加州Beverly Hills的家中辭世，
享年73歲。歌手 James Brown 對這位前輩抱持高度崇敬之意：「我們失去了一位天才，失去了一位兄長。」、
「失去了一位音樂大師，非常讓人難過。」

        Ray Charles是歌手，也是鋼琴/鍵盤樂手，更是作曲家、製作人，可以說是才華洋溢。尤其以他沙啞、極富磁性及情感的歌聲，最是打動人心，更以〝I Can’t Stop Loving You〞、〝What’d I Say〞、〝Hit the Road Jack〞等代表曲傳唱於世；而他的貢獻更不僅於此。早在60年代，Ray Charles即以先驅者的姿態，嘗試多元曲風創作，並進一步融冶於一爐，成功跨越美國黑白界線； 90年代他甚至為百事可樂代言廣告，當中一句“You got the right one, baby. Uh-huh”，更成為當時美國的流行語。並一直到90年代仍有作品問世，為樂壇的長青樹。

       另外，Charles也多次贏得葛萊美獎的肯定(12次)，其中包含連續三年以〝Hit the Road Jack 〞、
〝I Can’t Stop Living You〞及〝 Busted〞三首曲子獲得連三年最佳節奏藍調唱片的殊榮。


      Charles並於1986年列名搖滾名人殿堂、1987年葛來美終身成就獎。也曾獲得美國錄音藝術學院頒發的終成就獎；在市場與評論間深受肯定。

      Charles誕生在1930年9月23號的於喬治亞州；很快地，全家就搬到佛羅里達的Greenville，那時Charles還非常地小。而他從3歲時即開始學鋼琴；7歲時，就因為青光眼的緣故導致他雙眼全盲，後進入了州立聾啞學校就讀，在當中學習了古典鋼琴、豎琴；也用點字法，學習看譜、編寫音樂。1945年，15歲時，他的雙親過世，於是Charles離開了學校，開始在外闖蕩生涯。

     這段期間，Charles曾在夜總會表演，並於1948年組成了他第一個三重唱團體，並開始發表作品。
1950年，他們的單曲〝Baby Let Me Hold Your Hand〞成為他美國R&B榜單的第一個Top10熱門歌曲；1954年，
Ray Charles在喬治亞州某個小電台播出了他的〝 I Got a Woman〞這首融合了福音及藍調的歌曲，因為Charles詮釋這首作品時所展現出來的完美福音式唱腔，搭配節奏緊湊、跳躍的編曲，使它已經成為Charles最具代表性的歌曲之一，也算是他成功的初期階段。

        不過真正屬於Ray Charles的時代可以說從"What'd I Say"開始，這張專輯推出後獲得大眾的喜愛，一舉進入全美流行專輯榜中。因為"What'd I Say"編曲裡結合前期的藍調歌謠、福音性質濃厚的黑人靈歌、爵士、鄉村之外，加入了搖滾樂的元素、經典電子琴演奏和他本身能觸碰人心的唱腔。於是他打破了黑人、白人間的藩籬，自此以後，60年代變成Ray Charles的全盛時期。

      此後以降也是他個人的黃金時代，爾後陸續又以〝I Can’t Stop Loving You〞、〝Geogia On My Mind〞、〝
Hit the Road Jack 〞等曲奠定他的地位。「他的音樂讓人〝目不轉睛〞─既是藍調，也是R&B，也是福音，也是SWING，他把我聽過的所有元素、類型全部融合在一起，成為屬於他自己，讓人驚艷，充滿靈魂的樣貌。」─
歌手Van Morrison在2004年4月接受滾石雜誌採訪時說到。

     不過，Ray Charles也曾經歷過生命的低潮，1964年，他因吸食海洛因被逮捕，之後於加州進行勒戒；與毒品對抗的時間前，長達20年。之後他鮮少談論這部分，深怕公眾影響到對他的工作的看法。「這段時間的確身心都很難受，但只要我一站到舞台上、一聽到樂團伴隨而來的音樂，我就好像吃了阿斯匹靈一樣，前面感覺的痛苦都消失了。」他說到。

    音樂對於他而言「是我自身的一部份，如同血液一般。自從我來到人世間，它就是我身上一股力量。就像食物跟水一樣，是必需的存在。」在自傳中Charles說到。

    傳奇過去了，不過他對於音樂的熱愛與貢獻，卻讓喜愛他的人永難忘懷。聽著Ray Charles的歌聲，我們能多說些什麼呢？再見了，Ray Charles。
